Description: 474 leaves (pages in the index are unpaginated). 16º. 145 x 95 mm. Thin brownish paper with some unindetified watermarks.

 

Text area: 120 x 70 mm. 1 column. Printed in black ink. Foliated. Catchwords on every page, bottom right. Signatures:A-Z, Aa-Zz, Aaa-Zzz, Aaaa-Mmm.

 

Ornamentation: 2-3 lines printed initials. Chapters titles in italics.

 

Binding: 160 x 105 mm. Original white pigskin, blind-tooled with geometrical and decorative ornament, partly worn out; over beveled wooden boards. Sewn on 3 double thongs. Edges tinted in blue. 2 paper flyleaves at the front and back. Bronze spiral-shaped clasps with pigskin straps.

 

Provenance, inscriptions, and librarian marks: At the top and bottom of the spine, there are two paper labels; the top one has three illegible lines, and the bottom one shows the number: 82. On the second register from the top, written in brown ink in 17th-century script, is the author’s name. On the front pastedown, printed in blue: 12 Hom; below in grey pencil: 82; on the recto of the second front flyleaf, there is a rectangular, possibly 19th-century stamp of Bibliothek des Franziskanerklosters Miltenberg (Bavaria); on the title page, there is a small paper label: ex libris... ... ... de anno 1672, in brown ink. Slightly lower, printed in blue: 12 Hom; and below in grey pencil: 82.

 

Condition: Some foxing. Otherwise, in very good condition.

 

Contents: Jacobus de Voragine, a 13th-century Dominican friar and archbishop of Genoa, is best known for his work The Golden Legend, a collection of hagiographies. In addition to this famous compilation, Jacobus also authored Sermones De Sanctis Per Anni Totius Circulum, a series of sermons dedicated to saints, arranged to be delivered throughout the liturgical year. These sermons reflect his deep knowledge of scripture and theological interpretation, providing a rich resource for clergy in their preaching and spiritual guidance. His works were widely read and influential in medieval Europe, contributing to the devotional practices of the time.
